Periodontics

Periodontal disease, commonly known as “gum disease,” occurs when bacteria infect the parts of the gums around the teeth, forming pockets and destroying tissue and bone if left untreated. Worse yet, the infections can lead to teeth loss, and have even been linked to more serious problems like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and low birth-weight babies.

Fortunately, however, periodontal disease is preventable and controllable, and we offer advanced disease-control treatments and cosmetic gum procedures.

Our expertise also involves correcting “gummy smiles,” uneven gum lines, “long teeth” from exposed roots, indentations in the gums and jaw bone – all the areas necessary to give you a brilliant smile, no matter what canvas we begin with.

Scaling / Cleaning of Teeth

Scaling /cleaning of teeth is most commonly advised treatment by a dentist which removes the adherent tartar & food particles in between teeth and also between teeth and gums. External stains on the teeth which cannot be removed by simple brushing, can be removed by scaling and polishing.

Scaling is the procedure done by state of art. modern ultra sonic technique which does not cause any harm or scratches on the natural tooth structure. No local anesthesia is given for this procedure as this is virtually painless procedure

Scaling also removes stains.External stains on the teeth are caused by smoking, tobacco, tea & coffee intake etc. Sometimes even if a person does not have these habits & has good brushing habits still stains are observed. That is because of few chromogenic bacteria present in the saliva which causes these stains.

The most common periodontal problem seen are:

1.Gingivitis: Bacterial plaque is the root cause of most dental problems. This is a filmy coating made up of millions of bacteria which collect around your gum line & between your teeth. You can temporarily get rid of this furry coating by brushing, but the bacteria begin growing again almost the moment you finish brushing . If neglected , bacterial plaque attacks your gums, leading to inflammation and bleeding. This condition is called gingivitis. Bleeding gums are a warning that plaque is weakening the tissue between your gums & teeth & the bone supporting your teeth.

2.Periodontitis: Bacterial plaque that is not removed , begins absorbing your salivary salts, particularly calcium & phosphate and hardens to form tartar/calculus. When calculus settles between your gums & teeth, it forces your gums to recede from your teeth exposing the roots. This makes your nerves vulnerable to extreme temperature and /or sweet and sour food. The bone also recedes in the same fashion as gums, which causes mobility of teeth & ultimately leads to tooth loss.

From here the infection spreads to the underlying bone (which supports the root of the teeth). The gums and underlying bone form the foundation of the teeth. Once the foundation gets infected (pockets are formed in gums, which, if not treated, lead to bone defects), it leads to mobility of teeth (pyorrhoea). Once the mobility sets in, initially one can reverse the problem of mobile teeth/spongy bleeding lose gums by certain procedures like:

  • Scaling of teeth: Supragingival / Subgingival
  • Curettage
  • Root Planing
  • Gingivectomy
  • Flap Surgery
  • Mucogingival Surgery
  • Bone / Osseous Surgery etc.

Scaling if done at a proper time ie. every six months to remove calculus, the cycle of gum disease is broken & the onset of gum disease is prevented
