Placement of a crown

Procedure of placement of a crown

Procedure of placement of a crown:

There are basically three types of crowns:

  • All-porcelain which is tooth colored.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal
  • All metal.

Depending upon various factors the choice of the type of crown is made:

    1. Your i.e., the patient’s choice
    2. strength of the remaining tooth structure
    3. In front teeth mostly tooth colored is used (all-porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal)
    4. In areas of pressure or high stress all metal is preferred

Fitting a crown requires at least two visits to the dentist’s office.

Appointment1:

Step 1:

Initially, the dentist removes the decay and prepares and shapes the tooth.

Step 2:

Making of an impression.

Step 3:

Making and fitting of a temporary or transitional crown made out of plastic or metal to assist in function or esthetics.

Appointment 2:

The temporary crown is removed. The final crown is fitted and adjusted and cemented into place.

Important:

Your dentist will match the crown color to the color of your teeth. If you are considering whitening your teeth, you should talk to your dentist about tooth whitening options before the crown is made. Since bleaching products do not affect the color of crowns, it is important that your natural teeth are whitened first so the dentist can match the crown color to the color of your teeth after they are whitened.
